Academics rank Virgin America top airline

Here are the 2013 rankings for the nation's leading 15 airlines based on on-time performance, bag handling, bumping passengers and complaints filed with the federal government, according to researchers from Wichita State University in Kansas and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona. The 2012 rankings are in parentheses.

2. JetBlue Airways (2)

3. Hawaiian Airlines (5)

4. Delta Air Lines (4)

5. Alaska Airlines (6)

6. Endeavor

7. US Airways (9)

8. Southwest Airlines (8)

9. American Airlines (10)

10. AirTran Airways (3)

11. Frontier Airlines (7)

12. United Airlines (14)

13. ExpressJet (13)

14. SkyWest (12)

15. American Eagle (11)

Endeavor is new to the rankings; it was called Pinnacle Airlines.
