SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) — Drag boat races in San Angelo have been delayed nearly three months due to low water levels at Lake Nasworthy amid lack of rain.
The Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series races originally scheduled June 27-29 have been reset to Sept. 12-14. Organizers cited driver safety in delaying the races in a region still recovering from drought.
The San Angelo Standard-Times (http://bit.ly/1rcTaor ) reports city officials on Monday announced the closure of six out of 10 public boat ramps on Lake Nasworthy, which is at about 60 percent of capacity.
Phil Neighbors with the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce says concerns include the width of Lake Nasworthy. Neighbors says canal banks continue to grow as lake water disappears, shrinking the competition area.
