AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A 26-year-old man has been found guilty of capital murder in the shooting death of an Austin police officer.
A Travis County jury deliberated about an hour before finding Brandon Daniel guilty Friday in the death of officer Jaime Padron (HEYE'-may pah-DRONE').
The punishment phase of the trial will begin Monday. Daniel is facing either execution or life in prison without parole.
Daniel did not appear to react when the verdict was read.
Employees of a Wal-Mart store called police in April 2012 after seeing Daniel stumble through the aisles. He later acknowledged being under the influence of the anti-anxiety drug Xanax.
When Padron approached Daniel, the former software engineer ran. Padron tackled him and the two struggled before Daniel pulled a handgun and shot Padron at close range.
