SHELBY, N.C. -- A 17-month-old girl is in the hospital after being shot by a 3-year-old boy.

The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office said the call came in around 11:30 Thursday morning regarding the incident in the 100 block of Jenny Drive in Shelby.

The victim's mother called 911 as she was transporting the 17-month-old to Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

The child was then taken to Carolinas Medical Center for observation. The extent of the child's injuries is not known at this time.

The Sheriff's Office says the girl was shot by her 3-year-old brother with their father, Justin Carper's, .9mm handgun. Carper is a parenting blogger, youth pastor and unpaid columnist for a local newspaper.

Carper tweeted "Seeing my little girl run across the floor laughing is pretty special tonight!" just before 10:30 Thursday night.

Authorities are gathering information and will submit a case to the District Attorney, who will determine if charges will be filed.
