AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The murder trial is scheduled to begin for a former Central Texas firefighter accused in the 2011 death of his girlfriend, whose weighted body was found in Lake Travis.

Joe Carr could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted in the death of Veronica Navarro. The 29-year-old Carr was detained as he attempted to cross the border into Canada three days after Navarro's body was found in July 2011. Customs officials have said he was acting strangely when questioned.

He was extradited to Travis County where he remains incarcerated on a $1 million bond. The Austin American-Statesman reports (http://bit.ly/1encfQB ) he began working in 2008 for the Pedernales Fire Department.

Authorities say the body of the 22-year-old Navarro was tied to a paint can similar to one found in Carr's home.
