WOODVILLE, Texas (AP) — An East Texas sheriff says a husband and wife found slain outside a church were ambushed after visiting his 4-year-old daughter from a previous marriage.
The Tyler County Sheriff's Office has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the killing of Nathan Bradley Maddox and Krystal Renee Maddox of Zavalla (zuh-VAL'-uh). Both were fatally shot Saturday outside Mount Carmel Baptist Church near Colmesneil (KOHL'-mis-neel).
Sheriff Bryan Weatherford on Monday said the shooter was gone when officers arrived, there were no witnesses and it was apparent that the victims were ambushed.
Sheriff's officials say the child, who was in the church during the supervised visit and not hurt, remains with her maternal grandparents.
Maddox attorney Ryan Deaton says the victims sought custody of the girl.
