AMARILLO, Texas (AP) — A 45-mile north-south route in the Texas Panhandle has been closed due to about 20 traffic accidents during freezing, snowy conditions.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the accidents that began Saturday morning closed U.S. 287 between Amarillo and Dumas (DOO'-mus).

Sr. Trooper Chris Ray say the wrecks continued throughout the day and officers closed the highway Saturday afternoon in order to clear the accident scenes.

Ray says nobody has been killed but a number of people were injured. He did not immediately have an estimate on how many people were hurt but says the injuries range from bumps and scratches to travelers in critical condition.

The National Weather Service reported temperatures in the 20s and snow or misty conditions late Saturday afternoon in the area.
