SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A 40-year-old woman who killed a man in a drunken-driving wreck has been sentenced to life in prison in the latest effort by prosecutors to seek more serious penalties against habitual offenders.
A jury in San Antonio sentenced Frances Rosalez Ford on Thursday following her earlier guilty plea to a murder charge.
The San Antonio Express-News reports (http://bit.ly/1c7MWiR ) she's the fourth person in Bexar (bayr) County to have received a lengthy sentence due to a tactic by prosecutors to forgo some intoxication manslaughter charges for felony murder.
Ford caused the death three years ago of 38-year-old Lawrence Vigier Belcher. It was her third drunken-driving offense.
Defense attorney Monica Guerrero asked jurors for a 20-year term, saying it would have been the maximum sentence had Ford been charged with intoxication manslaughter.
