PALMHURST, Texas (AP) — Children in the Rio Grande Valley are being greeted by a blue Santa Claus.

The Monitor newspaper in McAllen reports (http://bit.ly/J9YxCq ) that Officer Joseph Swindle of the Palmhurst Police Department greeted local elementary school students Thursday in a blue costume meant to represent law enforcement.

"Blue Santa Claus" walked into the building following a police escort of five SUVs with their lights flashing.

While the debate over the color of Santa's skin carries on elsewhere, there was no argument about the color of his coat at the school. Children jumped up and down Thursday as Santa entered.

The police department gave all of the 650 children at the school a gift with the help of toy drives organized by the local H-E-B and Walmart.

Palmhurst is northwest of McAllen.
