AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A dozen Republicans are running for the U.S. House seat that Texas congressman Steve Stockman is surrendering to challenge U.S. Sen. John Cornyn.
None of the GOP candidates in the solidly Republican 36th congressional district have previously been elected to Washington. The list includes former mayors, a city councilman and Doug Centilli, chief of staff to Republican U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady.
Stockman served one term in the 1990s and was sent back in 2012 after winning one of four new congressional seats awarded to Texas. He surprised Republicans last week with a last-minute filing to challenge Cornyn in the March primary.
Because of Stockman's late decision, the candidate filing deadline for his seat was extended another week.
Only one Democrat filed to run in the race.
