AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — U.S. Sen. John Cornyn says fellow Republican and U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman is a fascinating person — but that he's not overly worried about him as a primary challenger.
In a surprise move, Stockman withdrew his filing for re-election to his suburban Houston congressional seat and instead challenged Conryn.
Stockman is the kind of tea party-backed challenger Cornyn, the Senate minority whip, had hoped to avoid ahead of the Texas Republican primary in March.
But Cornyn noted Wednesday that 12 other, little-known Democrats and Republicans have challenged him. He said he was paying Stockman only as much attention as he was any of them.
Cornyn said that "while Mr. Stockman is a fascinating person, there's no guarantee that he's actually going to be competitive in the primary."
