SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A South Texas man facing probation over the 2009 death of his 3-year-old adopted daughter has died after becoming ill during his trial.
The Bexar (bayr) County Medical Examiner's office on Tuesday confirmed the death of 49-year-old Norberto Velasquez. Velasquez died Saturday at a San Antonio hospital. The cause of death was sepsis due to pneumonia.
Velasquez on Nov. 8 was convicted of causing serious bodily injury to a child by omission resulting in the death of Melody Velasquez. Investigators say she died of head trauma.
The San Antonio Express-News (http://bit.ly/1k6fGcc ) reports jurors decided on probation but Velasquez was taken to a hospital before formal sentencing. A judge later announced the penalty for Velasquez.
His partner, Matthew Aranda, awaits trial on a murder charge. The couple adopted Melody in 2008.
