HOUSTON (AP) — A California woman must serve seven years in prison over the 2010 death of a diabetic immigrant whose body was dumped in a Texas Panhandle ditch.

A federal judge in Houston on Tuesday sentenced Demi Mishel Muniz of Los Angeles. Jurors convicted Muniz of conspiracy to transport and harbor immigrants resulting in the death of a 38-year-old man.

Investigators say the victim was in the U.S. illegally and was being smuggled from Mexico to Los Angeles in August 2010 when he got sick. His body was found in a Interstate 40 ditch near Vega (VAY'-guh), in an area about 20 miles west of Amarillo. The death was blamed on pneumonia and diabetes.

Muniz denied contacting the man's wife for a smuggling payment, then refusing to take him to a hospital.
