FALFURRIAS, Texas (AP) — Five people are dead and 10 others are recovering from injuries after a sport utility vehicle being chased by South Texas police slammed into a tree.
The crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday in the South Texas town of Falfurrias, which is about 160 miles south of San Antonio.
Falfurrias Police Chief Ramiro Gonzalez said one of his officers tried to stop the SUV for speeding when the driver apparently lost control and the vehicle slammed into a tree on U.S. 281.
Gonzalez said the SUV's occupants were suspected of being in the United States illegally. Three of those injured were treated and discharged to federal custody, but conditions of the others weren't available on Monday. A call to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman wasn't returned.
