HARLINGEN, Texas (AP) — About a dozen women were waiting to see the doctor at a South Texas abortion clinic a day after a federal court ruling placed restrictions on women wishing to terminate their pregnancies.
A third of the abortion clinics in Texas can no longer perform the procedure starting Friday after the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans allowed most of the state's new abortion restrictions to take effect.
Dr. Lester Minto at Reproductive Services of Harlingen said Friday the restrictions would drive women to take desperate measures because the nearest qualifying clinic is hundreds of miles away.
The 5th U.S. Circuit Court ruled that Texas can enforce its law requiring doctors to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital while a lawsuit challenging the restrictions moves forward.
