LA MARQUE, Texas (AP) — A scholarship scam in the Houston area has led to warnings about a man falsely offering $1,000 and making inappropriate remarks.
La Marque (luh-MARK') police and the La Marque Independent School District are investigating.
The Galveston County Daily-News (http://bit.ly/17XB0ef ) reported Wednesday that the school counselor's office last week contacted the senior. The staff gave the girl the number of a man who called to say he wanted to give her a scholarship. The teen called him and provided her home address to mail a check.
The family contacted police after he called again and talked about girls dating older men.
School staffers face reviews on campus procedures.
Police say no laws were broken. An officer called the number and left a message warning the man to stop contacting the girl.
