ORANGE, Texas (AP) — Court documents show a Southeast Texas woman was high on marijuana when a 5-year-old boy she was baby-sitting apparently shot himself with her gun.
Melissa Ringhardt, of Vidor, is charged with abandoning or endangering a child for the death of John Read.
The 19-year-old Ringhardt was arrested Tuesday, the day after the boy died. She was living with the Read family and the parents were gone at the time of the shooting. Another 6-month-old child also was at home but wasn't hurt.
The Beaumont Enterprise reports (http://bit.ly/H99jbw) a probable cause affidavit says Ringhardt was "intoxicated throughout the day" and left a .40-caliber handgun on a coffee table while she went to take a nap.
She's held in the Orange County Jail under $250,000 bond.
