AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A man has died after being struck by a sport utility vehicle while gathered with others under a carport to celebrate a relative's birthday.
The Austin American-Statesman (http://bit.ly/16MX3CR ) reports 49-year-old Wallace L. Sorrells was killed after being struck Saturday by the vehicle driven by 23-year-old Michael Jay Smoltich.
Sorrells, a father of five, was holding his 22-month-old son when he was hit. Family members say his son was thrown from the site, suffering only minor scrapes and bruising. A 56-year-old man also in the carport was hospitalized with injuries including broken bones.
Smoltich remained in Travis County Jail Monday, charged with driving with an invalid license, leaving the scene and three counts of failure to stop and render aid. Bond is set at $165,000. Jail records didn't list an attorney.
