RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A Raleigh man was found guilty Monday of first-degree murder for murdering and dismembering the mother of two of his children.
The jury of four men and eight women deliberated for less than two hours before returning their verdict in the trial of Grant Hayes, 34. Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens sentenced Hayes to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Attorneys for Hayes said they would appeal.
Prosecutors said Hayes lured his former girlfriend, Laura Ackerson, to his Raleigh apartment in July 2011, and killed her because he did not want to pay child support. He then dismembered her body, packed it in four coolers and drove to Richmond, Texas, where he dumped the remains, authorities said.
Hayes got Ackerman to come to his home by promising to talk to her about child support, Assistant District Attorney Boz Zellinger said.
Defense attorneys said Hayes' current wife killed Ackerson, and he is only guilty of trying to help her cover it up. Amanda Hayes also is charged and is awaiting trial.
