FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A police affidavit says Fort Worth officers answering a burglary call were at the wrong house and had poor light when they fatally shot an armed homeowner.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram (http://bit.ly/1bj9A9q) reports two officers were sent to 409 Havenwood Lane before dawn May 28. According to the search warrant affidavit, they inadvertently began searching for a suspect across the street at 404 Havenwood, home of 72-year-old Jerry Waller.
Believing the burglary might still be in progress, the officers searched the grounds illuminated only by their flashlights. Encountering Waller near the corner of his house, the officers identified themselves and ordered Waller to drop the handgun he was holding. Instead, he pointed it at the officers, and one of the officers shot him dead.
Police are still investigating the shooting.
