HOUSTON (AP) — Hundreds of Houston residents temporarily blocked a highway as they protested a Florida jury's decision to clear neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager.
The Houston Chronicle (http://bit.ly/13LNM3a ) reports that the protesters, including some pushing a casket, blocked a portion of Texas 288 for about 15 minutes Monday. Most traffic was stopped though protesters did allow an ambulance to pass.
Activist Quanell X called for the demonstration in response to Zimmerman's acquittal Saturday in the 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Zimmerman's acquittal has sparked rallies around the nation as demonstrators voiced their support for Martin's family and decried the verdict.
