HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston-area physician and his doctor wife already sentenced to prison for health care fraud have been ordered to repay nearly $38 million.

A federal judge in Houston on Monday resentenced Arun and Kiran Sharma of Keemuh (KEE'-muh) on the restitution issue. The couple operated clinics in Baytown and Webster.

The husband reached a plea deal for fraudulently billing Medicare, Medicaid and private health care providers for procedures that weren't done. Arun Sharma in 2011 was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

His wife pleaded guilty to conspiracy and health care fraud. Kiran Sharma received eight years in prison.

U.S. District Judge David Hittner originally ordered restitution of more than $40 million but that amount was overturned on appeal. Hittner on Monday adjusted the repayment amount to about $37.7 million.
