KINGSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A seventh suspected illegal immigrant has died after a pickup truck crammed with 15 people wrecked during a police chase in South Texas.
Border Patrol spokesman Henry Mendiola (men-dee-OH'-luh) on Friday confirmed the additional death. He had no conditions on the eight hospitalized survivors.
The fleeing vehicle crashed into a security barrier at Naval Air Station Kingsville on Wednesday night. Officials have said there's no indication that the military installation about 40 miles southwest of Corpus Christi was the truck's destination.
Investigators initially reported six deaths. Mendiola says the seventh person — a woman — died Thursday at a Corpus Christi hospital.
Names of the 14 passengers and the driver who survived haven't been released. Authorities believe the victims are from Guatemala and Honduras. Those consulates have been notified.
