LONGVIEW, Texas (AP) — An inmate at an East Texas jail has died after authorities used a stun gun on him when he became violent.
Fifty-one-year-old Bobby Madewell of Longview was pronounced dead Thursday after being taken from Gregg County North Jail to a local hospital. Madewell had been jailed since March 12 on a bond forfeiture for charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Gregg County Sheriff Maxey Cerliano said that after exhibiting erratic behavior, Madewell resisted officers and became "extremely violent." The stun gun was then used so he could be subdued and put in restraints.
Records show Madewell had been booked into the jail 16 times since 1986 on various charges.
An autopsy has been ordered. Texas Rangers and the Gregg County Sheriff's department are investigating his death.
