AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A coalition of environmental groups has sent supporters to the Texas Capitol to try to block laws that would loosen environmental regulations.

The Alliance for Clean Texas met with lawmakers on Wednesday to stop measures that would reduce a citizen's right to challenge environmental permits and eliminate a requirement that the state use renewable energy.

Republican lawmakers have filed a number of bills that reduce environmental regulations, including one that would prohibit cities from banning plastic bags.

Members of the alliance include the League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club, Public Citizen and more than a dozen other groups.

Representatives said the alliance also asked lawmakers to pass bills that would increase water conservation, require more clean energy generation and expand recycling.
