MARSHALL, Texas (AP) — An East Texas county has reached a settlement with the family of an inmate who died in 2009 in what was ruled a suicide.

A federal judge in Marshall on Monday approved the settlement between Harrison County and survivors of Julius Eugene Maloy III. He had three children.

The Marshall News Messenger (http://bit.ly/ZF9jp7 ) reports the settlement amount hasn't been made public.

Maloy's mother Candle Bogamy told the judge that she'll make sure her three grandchildren — ranging in age from 11 to 16 — use the money for college. Part of the funds will be released to the youngsters when they reach age 18.

Maloy was jailed for probation violation in an assault family violence case. An autopsy found he hanged himself with a telephone cord in a separation cell.
