HOUSTON (AP) — A fire at a suburban Houston chemical plant has sent plumes of thick, black smoke billowing over several major roads, but no injuries have been reported.

The Deer Park Fire Department says firefighters are at the scene of the blaze that erupted midday Monday at the Akzo Nobel Chemical Plant in La Porte.

Firefighters from the La Porte Fire Department are at the scene. Deer Park firefighters are also on site, though they have not been asked to help extinguish the flames.

Phone calls to the chemical plant went unanswered.

The Houston area is under a wind advisory Monday, which could encumber efforts to suppress the fire.

There have been no evacuations and officials say there's no danger to the public.

La Porte is about 25 miles southeast of Houston.
