VAIL, Colo. (AP) — Vail is offering $30,000 to an alliance trying to raise more than $600,000 to subsidize a nonstop Houston flight this summer.

The alliance hopes to raise $626,000 by Feb. 15 in order to secure the flight for one of the valley's top summer markets.

According to the Vail Daily (http://tinyurl.com/auck8ah ), the Eagle County community subsidizes about $3 per available flight seat while communities like Jackson Hole, Wyo., Gunnison, Crested Butte, Montrose and Telluride are subsidizing flights at rates as much as 10 times that amount.

Airline officials say they need the subsidies because of a drop in demand over the past five years.
