CHICAGO (AP) — New research shows steroid shots aren't the best long-term treatment for tennis elbow.

The shots provide short-term pain relief, but the study suggests patients may get worse after a year and are more likely to have a recurrence.

By contrast, patients who got dummy injections alone or with physical therapy were more likely to completely recover and less likely to have tennis elbow come back.

The results are from a small Australian study but they echo previous research.

The study appears in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.
