ABILENE, Texas (AP) — A West Texas actress portraying a dying cancer patient has shaved her head to help express the character's emotional loss of hair from medical treatments.

Elise Pryor-Harden stars in "Wit," which opens Thursday night at the Abilene Community Theatre. The one-act play by Margaret Edson won a 1999 Pulitzer Prize for drama.

The Abilene Reporter-News (http://bit.ly/VoComw ) reports Pryor-Harden decided on her own to have her wavy brown hair sheared a week before opening night. Pryor-Harden says she wanted to make it realistic.

She portrays a college-level English professor who struggles to connect with her students and doesn't know how to relate to people on a personal basis.
