HOUSTON (AP) — The incoming top prosecutor in Harris County says he will personally try the man accused of killing a police officer and a bystander in the parking lot of a Houston body shop.

Mike Anderson will be sworn in as Harris County district attorney on New Year's Day.

Harlem Harold Lewis is charged in the Christmas Eve deaths of 53-year-old Bellaire officer Jimmie Norman and 66-year-old business owner Terry Taylor.

Anderson tells the Houston Chronicle (http://bit.ly/10mBRWd ) that he hasn't decided whether to seek the death penalty against the 21-year-old Lewis. He says the district attorney should personally prosecute defendants accused of killing a police officer.

Anderson spent 17 years as a prosecutor and 12 years as a state district judge.
