SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Another medical school in South Texas may be on the horizon in addition to the University of Texas System's celebrated move to open one in the Rio Grande Valley.
The University of the Incarnate Word is exploring opening a medical school as soon as 2016. The private Catholic university in San Antonio is in the midst of an enrollment boom, and nearly a quarter of its students are studying health-related fields.
The San Antonio Express-News (http://bit.ly/T1sKpo ) reports that university trustees will vote in March on whether to move forward with plans for a medical school after reviewing findings from a task force.
Incarnate Word enrolled a record 9,200 students this fall.
Earlier this month, the UT System approved creating a $100 million medical school along the underserved Texas-Mexico border.
