WASHINGTON, Pa. (AP) — A former Texas man has been sentenced to seven to 20 years in prison for killing a fellow worker who also moved from that state to work at a western Pennsylvania welding shop that does work for the oil and gas drilling industry.

Forty-nine-year-old Danny Kirtley was sentenced Thursday, having been convicted in September of voluntary manslaughter. He fatally shot 34-year-old Trevor Compton of Mont Belvieu, Texas at Rosenboom Welding & Fabrication in North Strabane Township in February 2011.

Washington County prosecutors said Kirtley fought with Compton then shot him. But Kirtley contends Compton and another worker attacked him and one of them hit him with a pipe before he fired in self-defense.

Kirtley's defense attorney tells the Observer-Reporter of Washington, Pa. (http://bit.ly/V7M8Qt ) that he'll likely appeal the conviction and Thursday's sentence.
