PECOS, Texas (AP) — A 30-year-old West Texas man is in custody on charges he threatened to kill law enforcement officers, members of their families and detonate bombs.

Jacob Ramos Esparza, of Pecos, is set for a detention hearing Thursday before a federal magistrate in Alpine.

A criminal complaint that led to his arrest by federal agents Tuesday outside a Pecos truck stop says Esparza used online chat forums to post threats against police in Fort Stockton, Pecos, Big Spring and Midland.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say other threats were made in emails, some posted under the name of "El Diablo." They warned of chemical weapons, car bombs and high-caliber munitions, Christmas Day carnage and pipe bombs in Pecos, Midland and Odessa.

Conviction could get Esparza 20 years in prison.
