VICTORIA, Texas (AP) — James "Jim" Rech (rek), a former editor of the Victoria Advocate newspaper, has died.

His daughter Tami Wilson says Rech died Monday at a Victoria hospital following a lengthy heart-related illness. He was 83.

Rech was born in Pickens, Miss., but grew up in Houston.

He was editor of The Daily Texan at the University of Texas, graduating in 1951 with a journalism degree. Wilson says Rech enlisted in the Army, then worked at the Alice Echo-News Journal after being discharged.

Rech joined the Victoria Advocate in 1953 as a reporter. He retired in 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Alice, his daughter and two grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Victoria, with burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
