HOUSTON—Little girls across the city are giddy. American Girl officially opens a store in Houston on Saturday.

The new Memorial City Mall location had a soft opening Wednesday. A group of BFFs (best friends forever) from Katy, spent the morning at the store. Their mothers brought them. The girls had been anxiously awaiting the opening after a group trip a few years ago.

“We went to Dallas when the girls were five,” says mom Lisa Pickard. “We were there when it very first opened.”

American Girl’s vice-president of retail, Wade Opland, explained American Girl is a destination store. He said there’s so much to do and see. With the store’s Bistro and Doll Salon, parents can’t resist making a trip no matter how far.

Keisha Hopping is an army wife and mother.

“As soon as we found out the date we knew we were going,” she said.

She lives in Fort Polk, Louisiana and will journey three hours Saturday—by car with her two girls—to the new store. “The girls really enjoy seeing the dolls and having all the choices there in front of them,” Hopping said. “They want to get corresponding outfits for their dolls.”

Hopping and her daughters will be one of the estimated 750, 0000 to 1 million guests who will shop, party and play at the Memorial City Mall store with its bustling bistro and pretty party room.

It all comes at a price, but one moms are willing to pay. If not, their daughters are willing to sacrifice. “Don’t buy me any shoes. I’m saving it,” one anxious little girl said to her mom.
