HOUSTON—Kids are costly; the toys, clothes, books and basics add up so fast.

Lanette Hickenbottom, a Sugar Land mother of four, has a way to make it work. She has practically new baby bouncers, bottles and books all tagged and ready for sale. Most of her inventory is courtesy of her daughters, Abby and Anna, ages 6 and 3.

The girls, along with the rest of the family, helped Hickenbottom prepare for the latest “Just Between Friends,” a massive consignment sales event.

“If you would go buy these retail, it would cost you more than $3.50,” Hickenbottom said about a cute children’s winter coat and sweater.

Hickenbottom has long taken advantage of super savings as a buyer, consignor and volunteer for sales events in the area. She gets a good first look at most of the merchandise, both new and gently used.

“I couldn’t believe people actually bought something brand new and it was selling and that I could get it for that price. I didn’t’ have to go buy, pay $100 for that, I could get it for $50,” Hickenbottom said.

Shoppers can expect quality goods guaranteed, according to organizers.

“We have a pretty strict inspection process. People like to refer to us as a garage sale but we do not allow people to enter items that are not up to standards for Just Between Friends,” said Melanie Newell, an event coordinator.

Just Between Friends says although people like to refer to them as a garage sale, they do not allow items into the sale for people to buy if it’s not up to standards for the organization.

“That means no tears, stains or rips. The clothing has to look really nice. Shoes have to be meticulously clean,” Newell said.

Everything is also inspected for recalls.

“You might be digging through a few bins, but what you’re digging through are quality items,” she said.

Buyers can expect to save 50 to 90 percent. The Just Between Friends Sugar Land event runs through Saturday, August 25th at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds.

You do have to register to tag and sell your merchandise, but not to buy.

The next Just Between Friends event is scheduled for September 13th in Kingwood.
