HOUSTON—This fall in fashion everything that’s old is new again. From lace overlay, polka dots and oversized off the shoulder tops; if Pat Benatar, Madonna or Molly Ringwald wore it, it’s in style.
Style from the1980’s is back in a big way and rounding out racks of clothing at Wish Warehouse and Duo.
“I was young in the 80s, but I did have an older brother and sister,” said Clair Hummel, a sales associate at Duo. “I definitely enjoyed watching my sister with her big hair and her t-shirts tied up in a knot on the side, for sure.”
The style is Miami Vice meets Material Girl, but with a Mod Makeover. If you’re trying to pull off the trend, wear lots of day glow. Colors this season for tweens and teens are beyond bold.
“The colors are really bright and fun, but it’s not too much. Just wear them with some denim pants and you’re good to go,” said Myisha Sanchez of Wish Warehouse.
Guys can keep jeans as their base, too. Hummel dressed a recent college grad in a patched, linen-style jacket with a knit hoodie.
“The hoodie underneath, that’s a bright fun pop of color,” Clair said. “Over it we have the jacket. The jacket’s an interesting twist that’s got some distressing to it, patches to make it more of a modern style.”
What’s new this season is an interpretation of everything that was old.
Morning Cup of Style blogger Dee Brown follows the hottest trends and looks forward to fall fashion.
“That’s the wonderful thing about fashion. It recycles,” Brown said. “It goes on and on and on. It comes back, it leaves and it comes back. That’s why it’s good to hold on to things and keep things. Because you never know what may come back in fashion later.”
Newcomers to the 80s-inspired trends who are not sure what to wear have no need to worry; just seek out mom or dad for style advice.
