HOUSTON—There’s nothing like fun in the sun, but too much sun could be pretty painful.
Sunburn is a burn to living tissue. Avoiding the sun at its peak is key, but when it’s too late, look to your pantry for help.
Rub your breakfast onto your skin to slow inflammation. Yogurt and cooled-down oatmeal contain helpful anti-inflammatory agents.
Some vegetables also help! Boil lettuce in water, then strain it and refrigerate it to quickly cool the pain. Strawberries contain lots of tannic acid, which helps take out the sting. Mash up a few ripe ones and smear the pulp over your sunburn.
After a sunburn, experts say you should avoid highly-fragrant bubble baths, soaps, colognes and perfumes—they could dry and further irritate your skin. Stick with mild soaps and don’t scrub too hard.
While short term solutions may work, always remember to grab the sunscreen on the way out the door.
