Louisiana families find shelter in Houston area

HOUSTON A lot of people who left Louisiana ahead of the storm were glad to be safe, but worried as they watched the storm coverage from Houston.

Along Interstate 10 in Baytown evacuees were found in every hotel KHOU 11 News checked.

Ruth Carbajal, her husband and grandson were at the Sleep Inn. They live in Metairie and had been watching news coverage hoping to catch a glimpse of conditions in their neighborhood.

It happened seven years ago when Katrina (came). I lost everything. So, to save our lives is the most important thing, she said.

They said they d like to go home soon, but do not want to return if there s flooding or no power.

The Garcias, another family, lives about five miles away from the hard hit Plaquemines Parish. They survived Hurricane Katrina and the thought of losing everything again was stressful they said.

I was at first worried about the vandalism. Now I m worried about everything else. You know, and I m trying to keep calm so my kids don t realize how stressed out we all are. Cause if they see us stressed out the last thing I want is my kids to go through the stress I m going through, said Gary Garcia.
