CHANNELVIEW, Texas - Thieves broke into a car repair shop in Channelview overnight and got away with presents intended for a young Harvey victim.
They got into several cars and stole tools from a building at Bates Collision Center. One of the cars hit was intended for a single mom who lost her vehicle in Hurricane Harvey.
“The big crusher was that all the gifts were gone that we had loaded up in the trunk the night before, wrapped, and everything was ready to go,” said Leila Bates, owner of Bates Collision Center.
The business planned to give away the car, which was loaded with presents, Thursday morning. Employees, friends, and family scrambled to replace every gift just in time.
“To that Grinch that stole these gifts, you can’t win. The good people of Harris County are always going to come out and support,” said Sgt. Eddie Rivera, Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Vanessa Zuniga and her 4-year-old son Nathan received their Christmas presents after all. The mother was overwhelmed with gratitude.
“I will never forget this. I will never forget this. I will forever be grateful to everybody,” said Zuniga.
Zuniga says the first place she’s going with her new car is the zoo with her son.
