DALLAS - One woman is dead after a collision with a stolen tractor traveling the wrong way on a northwest Dallas freeway.
A man was driving the stolen tractor southbound in the northbound lanes in the 9900 block of Stemmons Freeway around 5:45 a.m. when it collided with an SUV occupied by two people.
“The [tractor's] front end loader struck the front right side of the vehicle’s hood, decimating the passenger side of the vehicle,” police said in a release.
The passenger, 20-year-old Elizabeth Suarez, was killed on impact.
Diana Mejicanos, the driver of the SUV, was taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas in an unknown condition.
Witnesses told police the tractor was traveling the wrong way without lights when it swerved and hit Mejicanos’ vehicle head-on. The driver of the tractor fled the scene on foot. Witnesses said he was bleeding from injuries to his face and leg.
Two construction workers moved the abandoned tractor to the shoulder of the freeway after the crash.
Police say the tractor was stolen from the City of Dallas Water Department roughly 45 minutes before the fatal crash.
