Man accused of stealing car with toddler inside has criminal history

KENS 5 Eyewitness reporter Adi Guajardo is digging into a suspect's criminal history after police arrested him in a stolen car with a San Antonio toddler inside overnight.

A toddler is safe with his family after a man with a criminal history allegedly jumped into a running car on the west side of San Antonio on Monday night and took off with the toddler inside.

The mother says she left three-year-old Josue Gonzalez in the car sleeping for less than five minutes on the when a man jumped into her car.

The mother says she immediately called the police.

San Antonio Police launched an Amber alert and searched in the air and on the ground for the stolen vehicle.

Fayette County authorities say a person who received the amber alert located the vehicle at rest stop in La Grange, nearly two hours from San Antonio where the car was stolen and tipped them off.

Shortly after, officials arrested 31-year-old Victor Torres and recovered the toddler unharmed. He was reunited with his family late Monday night.

Torres was arrested on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and San Antonio police also issued a warrant for kidnapping.

This is not Torre’s first run-in with police. Torres has been found guilty of criminal mischief, possession of a controlled substance and was charged with assault with a bodily injury in the past, according to court documents.
