Austin dog park accused of spreading kennel cough

AUSTIN, Texas -- The popular restaurant and dog park "Yard Bar" is facing scrutiny from some of its customers after Reddit users posted that some dogs became infected with "kennel cough" after visiting the business.

Nearly 100 comments followed the Reddit post that reads in part, "I work in an animal hospital and this past week we've had 4 or 5 dogs come in for kennel cough and every owner mentioned they'd been to Yard Bar recently."

The business is located off Burnet Road near Justin Lane and is also an off-leash dog park.

Manager Keith Sobieralski said they saw the post and “immediately responded to it.”

He wrote, “Hi. Yard Bar Manager here. We routinely hand wash and sanitizing our bowls daily with pet-safe sanitizer. We do require that ALL dogs that enter the park are up to date on Rabies, DHPP, and Bordatella vaccinations. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me (keith@yardbar.com) directly or give us a call (512) 900-3773.”

Veterinarian Everett Simmons said dogs run the risk when visiting any dog parks.

“You let dogs all congregate together, you get in a situation where that can happen,” said Dr. Everett Simmons.

He said the illness is common and can be treated with antibiotics.

Vets said if you suspect your dog has "kennel cough," and the symptoms have lasted more than a few days, go see your local vet. The best way to prevent the illness is by getting a vaccine.
