Off-duty DPS trooper shot during attempted home invasion

Hour-long crime scene in Kirby neighborhood

KIRBY, Texas – An off-duty Department of Public Safety trooper was shot in an attempted home invasion Thursday night.

DPS confirmed the incident happened at 11:45 p.m. Thursday at the trooper’s residence in the 5100 block of Tom Stafford Drive.

According to DPS, the trooper grabbed his service firearm, put on his protective vest and went to investigate an intruder in his backyard.

As he left the inside of his home, he was immediately attacked by a man who tried to force his way into the trooper’s home, according to DPS. During the struggle, the trooper’s firearm went off and the round was stopped by the trooper’s protective vest.

The suspect fled on foot and the trooper was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center where he is being held for observation.

Along with DPS, multiple law agencies including San Antonio Police Department, Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, and Kirby Police Department were present at a crime scene.
