Wife arrested after husband's killing

The wife of a University Park fire captain was arrested after her husband was discovered dead Friday evening from a gunshot wound.

Chacey Poynter remained in the Rockwall County Jail Saturday on a charge of 'Murder-Conspiracy to Commit'.Robert Poynter, an 18-year-veteran with University Park Fire Department, was found dead in a vehicle in Hunt County.

A release from the Royse City Police Department provided details on what happened Friday evening.

Officers discovered a woman, believed to be Chacey Poynter, trying to stop vehicles on FM 35 near Hunt County Rd. 2595 around 10:40 p.m. Friday.

The woman said her husband had been shot and when officers checked a nearby vehicle they found the man dead from a single gunshot wound.

In the release, officers reported the woman gave ’suspicious and conflicting information’.  Officers at the scene said they believed there might have been another person at the location ‘at the time of the incident,’ according to release.

Royse City Police said one person had been detained, but did not provide further detail on who that person was. News 8 later confirmed the arrest of Chacey Poynter.  

In a statement on Saturday, the University City Fire Department wrote Captain Poynter began with the department in 1997 and was promoted to Lieutenant in 2002 and later Captain in 2012.
