AUSTIN - Police have charged a man after they say he punched a police horse in the face Friday night.
According to an arrest affidavit, officers were patrolling along the 400 block of Red River Street around 10 p.m. Friday when they spotted Eloy Villanueva, 42, staggering around. Officers approached Villanueva, who collapsed to the ground, the affidavit stated.
As officers were waiting on Austin-Travis County EMS medics to arrive and check on Villanueva, police said he got up and began to pet one of their horses, named Moonshine. The affidavit stated that without warning, Villanueva punched Moonshine hard enough that the horse bucked his head back in fright.
Villanueva was cuffed and booked into the Travis County Jail early Saturday morning. The affidavit and online records state he has been charged with felony interference with a police animal and a lesser charge of public intoxication. Jail records state he is being held on $7,500 bond.
