Melania Trump, Karen Pence visit Harvey relief efforts

First Lady Melania Trump and Second Lady Karen Pence will be visiting the Coastal Bend Wendesday to meet with families affected by Hurricane Harvey and the first responders who are part of the recovery effort.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - First Lady Melania Trump and Second Lady Karen Pence arrived in the Coastal Bend Wednesday to meet with families affected by Hurricane Harvey and the first responders who are part of the recovery effort.

During the visit, they held a meet-and-greet with first responders who have played a role in the recovery efforts since the storm. They then met a Rockport family who lost their home in the storm. They saw the remains of that family's home, along with the FEMA manufactured home the family is living in now.

Trump and Pence are also expected to make a trip to Charlie Marshall Elementary School in Aransas Pass to speak with students and faculty who were affected by the storm.

The two will end their visit with a stop at a local food bank to meet with volunteers and help sort boxes.

The Coastal Bend Food Bank played a vital role in the days and weeks that followed Hurricane Harvey by distributing food to families in need.

"The very first two weeks after the hurricane, the food bank distributed 1 million pounds of food to five counties," Hanson said.

The staff and volunteers responded to meet the needs of those affected by Harvey even though they too had also suffered severe damage.

"It was amazing to see the hard-working employees of the Food Bank the next morning," Hanson said.

Hanson believes the visit by Mrs. Trump and Mrs. Pence will shine a spotlight on the importance of the local nonprofit organizations.

"And also to the world the work and the heart of the Texas people that helped us recoup and bounce back," Hanson said.

The organization relies on individuals donation to feed the hungry year-round; especially during the holidays.

'We are very proud of the opportunity to show off," Hanson said.
