Elderly woman arrested after 7 hour SWAT standoff in Austin

AUSTIN - A 72-year-old woman was arrested Monday night after a 7-hour standoff with Austin police and SWAT in Southeast Austin.

Police tell KVUE the SWAT team was called to a home along the 2900 block of Allison Drive, south of East Oltorf and near Cypress Semiconductor, around 3:18 p.m. Monday.

APD said the initial call was that of a disturbance between a man and a woman, identified as Gladienne Hartzler by police. The man, whose relation to Hartzler is unknown, was able to leave the house when authorities arrived on the scene. Hartzler exited and showcased a weapon to authorities before returning inside and barricading herself.

Sunridge Drive was closed while authorities worked to make contact with Hartzler.

Police said after several attempts they were forced to gas the home. She exited the building and was arrested without incident after 10:30 p.m.

She has been charged with aggravated assault on a police officer.
