SAN ANTONIO -- A couple was able to escape from a fire uninjured, but their home was a total loss.
The fire started before 3 a.m. Monday on the northeast side.
They believe an animal, possibly a raccoon or possum, caused the fire. They said they often see animals like this near their home.
One of the owners of the mobile home involved, 65-year-old Maria Hoek, said the smell of smoke and fire woke her up.
She alerted her husband, and they tried to fight the fire with a garden hose before firefighters arrived.
The San Antonio Fire Department said the mobile home was consumed in fire when they arrived.
Investigators are working to determine the official cause of the fire.
